a commission - also used as image on cover of novella Kaleidescope by Vivienne Woolf, a book about an estranged mother and daughter and their renewed relationship - which I have conveyed in this picture of their meeting in a Bloomsbury cafe
It was only one session and remains unfinished. She was painted by Freud as the Benefits Supervisor

Painting in oils is my main practice ( and life drawing in pastels on paper) but I did study sculpture about 15 years ago - a weekly class with Patricia Barker ( a great teacher and sculptor) It involved sculpting in clay from a life model who rotated on a revolving platform so we stood still around the model in a circle with our clay on plinths and eventually got to see him or her from all angles, an endless surprise as the new view appeared. I recall the novelty of working from 3 D to 3D rather than 3D to 2D was exciting. It definitely informed my work in 2D on canvas and paper too. I still have these two clay figures . They have lasted well in the garden and built up a nice patina. I like the tension between them. And of course one can rearrange them to play with that. The male model, Phil, is someone I have painted and drawn a few times over the years. A lovely man who has a melancholy air when sitting for artists.
In the garden since 2009
I have sculpted him too

A silly dog we love
oil on canvas. I never met the cat and used one very old photo from the 1970s and a great deal of licence - this long deceased cat was flattered by the artist more than my other commissions. . I heard that the work was received with much joy -the client commissioned it to give as a gift to a family member who had doted on his library and Furry.
I did this one morning about 20 years ago when he sat for his own class as the model hadn’t shown up
An early portrait done in acrylic paint about twenty years ago when I studied portraiture at the Institute in London N2 . The Institute no longer exists; I went to classes there for several years to learn portraiture, sculpture and more. Henry Hagger, Patricia Barker, Lucie Geser and Jenny Rymer were my teachers.. Later I studied at Hampstead school of Art for many years and to this day I still get my weekly fix of Saturday morning life drawing there at Estelle Lovatt’s class - I highly recommend her . I also went to Portraiture and life painting classes at HSoA, studying with various practising artists including Val Wiffen, Douglas Druce, Desmond Healy and others .
Preliminary drawing in charcoal
Cartoonish representation
I think done on zoom during a drawing session online during Covid times and funnily enough he was called Zoom - what were the chances . And it’s a cartoon of a cartoonist too
